Peach is the cream of 9 Ball!

Blackpool's Daryl Peach has pocketed the 2007 World Pool Championship after a nail-biting 17-15 win over Roberto Gomez.

2007 WPC

No UK player has previously reached beyond the Last 16

It could have been an all Blackpool final. Karl Boyes lost in the semi-finals

The Araneta Coliseum - where the tournament was staged - hosted the 'Thriller in Manila' between Mohammed Ali and Joe Frazier

------

The 35 year old was crowned World Champion after an epic battle with Gomez which was 9 Ball's answer to the 1985 World Snooker final between Dennis Taylor and Steve Davis.

Peach - who has never got beyond the Last 64 previously - said: "It was just the most amazing match I've ever been involved in. In the end all I could think about was keeping my head still and making one shot at a time.

"It's unbelievable! It's just starting to sink in what I've achieved."

The final attracted the biggest crowd in the sport's history with over 5000 spectators and was billed as 'Superman v Lex Luther' - as local favourite Gomez's nickname is Superman.

Almost all of the crowd were behind the Filipino and Peach showed nerves of steel to come back from 15-12 and run the last five racks especially as some of his supporters were clapping Peach's mistakes.

Peach said: "It was hostile at times but I tried to just block it out and play my own game."

Neither player managed to hit the type of form they produced on their route to the final but the drama more than made up for it.

After blowing an early 8-3 lead, Peach stayed close to Gomez, with neither ever being more than two racks ahead.

"You never really think you are going to win the World Championship."

Daryl Peach

Gomez, 29, opened up a three rack lead though when he ran out the 27th rack and was just two racks from the World crown. The Filipino seemed to have got over his nerves and finally looked like the player that had bulldozed his way into the final.

However, Peach refused to be beaten and he finished the victor of a tremendous safety battle in the 28th rack which proved the turning point of the match.

Peach - who practices in Rileys Blackpool - ran out from the break in the next to level the scores.

Both players missed at 15-15 before Peach had his chance to close out the rack. He was always out of position but left himself a horrible shot on the 9 ball which failed to drop after a table length bank.

Daryl Peach

It was a relatively straight forward 9 for Gomez but he looked terrified as he reluctantly walked to the table to take his shot. The pressure of the expectant crowd was too much and he threw his cue at it. The pure pressure miss will no doubt haunt Gomez for the rest of his life - but Peach sprung out of his seat grateful of getting back to the table. He sank the 9 to reach the hill.

Peach closed out the match with a banked 1 ball into the centre pocket to set up his match-winning run-out.Μύ

He said: "I haven't got the most ability and there are lots of players with more talent than me but I just used my head and tried to focus on what I've got.

"It was probably the worst match I've played since the start of the tournament and the pressure for both of us was immense.

"I always knew I had a strong mind and the will to win.

"You never really think you are going to win the World Championship. I dreamt it but when it comes around you have to grab it with both hands and luckily I did exactly that."

Peach who picks up $100, 000 for the win dedicated his win to fiancee Lesley, baby daughter Ellie and his mum and dad who were all on tenterhooks back in the UK.

Peach will now get to play for Europe in this year's Mosconi Cup in Las Vegas. He described in On the Spot with Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Lancashire not being picked for Europe since he was in the winning side back in 1995 as his pool nightmare.

  • It was nearly an all Blackpool final in the Philipinnes which is regarded as the home of the world's greatest players. Karl Boyes who has moved from Radcliffe to Blackpool lost 11-4 to Gomez. Boyes had run the first four racks but then had to sit in his seat for over half an hour as Gomez raced to an 11-4 win.

The WPC also held in Manila last year. They moved it closer to the masses this year - at the Coliseum where people from all walkof life esp. mostly the masses troupe to at cheap ticket prices. None of this was unexpected except for the ignorant who don't get it. THE SPORTS NEED IT if it is to get visible and get sponsorships. Open your eyes and expand your horizons. Just a few miles away there was a golf tournament match and a tennis match, everyone was quiet - that's not what pool and billiards need right now.

Sam Jackson
Well done Daryl Peach, wish you all the success in the Mosconi cup and hope we win:D

james walshaw
well done mate.seen you twice in taiwan cant believe you did it.great job.

The Fizzer
I think that the way the crowd were towards Daryl in his last two games was a disgrace. They should think about holding the tournament a bit closer to home next year.Well done Daryl and the other English boys !!

Jon-Paul Murrow
Nice one! Daryl deserves some high profile recognition for this achievement. Sports personality of the year? I'd vote for him

Simon Greig
Great effort from Daryl, and thank heavens Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ recognised this result in some way. It's a massive achievement for one of our 9-ball players to beat the best in the world and I feared they'd completely ignore it. Just imagine if Steve Davis won it - no doubt it would have got front page coverage then.

Dan Matthew
Wat a legend !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

s hill
pool aint that hard a game

phil
i think this win has been totally under played in the media he is WORLD champion at a sport we are a minor country at and we almost had an all britain final

rynner omaois (philippines)
nice game by both cue artist, but mr.peach is the better and the lucky one on that match.congrats mr.peach, hope you will get another championship.

jed
I don't know why this is not popular in the UK. There is where the big money is.

James Hardy
Absolutely amazing win for Daryl and the UK. Now will the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ actually start to mention pool on their website. They show many minority sports but neglect pool which is a massive participation sport in the UK (one of the biggest) across all its formats.

tilly
well done even though your from blackpool and iam from preston (only joking)you had more bottle than gomez you certinly silence the crowd on your win

Malcolm Collier ( Vietnam )
Well done Daryl, I was watching the whole live on ESPN while I should have been working. Real edge of the seat stuff and a seriously partisan crowd to overcome.Fabulous job to say the least.Apologies to the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ also for me emailing them early this morning complaining about the lack of coverage!

Deano Watson
Well done mate, fantastic performance all round... excuse the pun but what a Peach of a week...

Gareth Swan
What an amazing victory! I watched it live and was on the edge of my seat the whole time! I was so pleased for you, you're a true gent.

Simmo
As already mentioned, this is a massive achievement and deserves to be recognised across the sporting spectrum in the UK as it has never been achieved before. Daryl took the hardest route to the final amidst a hot bed of local support and managed to stay calm, focused and deliver the goods for the UK. As someone said on Pro9, the futures not Orange its PEACHY!! :-) In addition, Karl put in an amazing performance to keep our dreams of an ALL UK final alive until the final hurdle.

thediamond
This win is biggest thing to happen to UK pool ever. It will have a marked effect on American Pool in the UK. Well done Daryl.

Frank Peach
A very exciting final and a fantastic win, well done Daryl, 2007 World Pool Champion!!

Steve
Fantastic performance. Hopefully this win can boost the profile of this sport in the Uk.

Riggers
And another thing....Ok Daryl won't be winning the Sports Personality of the Year award because this sport is not in the public eye, but I do hope the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ recognise Daryl's achievement during the programme next month. To put it in perspective:- No Englishman had ever reached the semi finals before and all of a sudden we have 2 lads from Blackpool in the semis and one who goes on to win it. - The Asians and Americans have dominated the sport for years with few European players getting a look in in recent years- Daryl's route to world crown was arguably the toughest ever as he had to beat the reigning champion and early favourite Ronnie Alcano, followed by pool legend and new favourite Fransico Bustamente followed by Roberto Gomez who was heavy favourite in the final all of whom were playing on home soil with 3000 fans packed in cheering them on.It's hard to find words to express what a massive achievement this is so I hope the beeb do the right thing and do an article for the Sports Personality of the Year programme.

Riggers
It's very difficult to sum up in words what a remarkable achievement this is. From a former Blackpudlian Blackpool should be very proud of Daryl & Karl and what this will do for UK Pool. Proud if you both... and our new tour, the GB 9 Ball Tour, now has the reigning World Champion in the ranks. How good is that!
