Why have I been asked to complete a pop-up survey?

We use pop-up surveys across bbc.co.uk to gather feedback from you, the people using our web pages. The surveys help us improve our services and we really value people taking the time to complete one.

Usually, a message will appear on a webpage asking you to share your thoughts on our website. You can select either yes or no.

What should I do if I see a pop-up I think is suspicious?

Such messages, which might offer you the chance to win something, won’t be authorised by the �鶹Լ��. They will most likely be the result of a virus or undesired download from another source.

In this case, check your security software is up to date before checking your device for viruses and malware. You can also report it to us, but be aware we cannot do anything to prevent these messages or provide support as the issue will be with the device you’re using.

This privacy notice describes how we collect and use personal information about you when you use �鶹Լ�� iPlayer for connected TV, in accordance with data protection law.

We require users to sign in with a �鶹Լ�� account to watch �鶹Լ�� iPlayer: Why must I sign in to a �鶹Լ�� account to use �鶹Լ�� iPlayer?

The �鶹Լ�� uses technologies similar to website cookies to measure audiences for our services on connected TVs. Information about how you use �鶹Լ�� iPlayer will be stored on your TV and securely on �鶹Լ�� servers.

Watchlist

For signed in users, when you add something to your Watchlist, this information is stored on the �鶹Լ�� servers to allow you to access your list from multiple devices.

For devices that do not support sign in, when you add something to your favourites, the action is stored locally on your device. This is then sent to �鶹Լ�� servers to find out if the programme is currently available on �鶹Լ�� iPlayer.

You can remove from your Watchlist by going to ‘Manage full list’ and selecting the X next to the programme you want to remove.

Recent searches

We think it’s useful to display the programmes you’ve previously searched for, so you can easily find them again. This information is stored on your device only and not sent to �鶹Լ�� servers. Deleting/clearing your search history isn’t currently available on connected TVs.

Other information stored on your device

To give you the best �鶹Լ�� iPlayer experience, this information may be stored on your device or �鶹Լ�� servers:

Your current video quality setting and the �鶹Լ�� region or nation you have chosen
Resume positions for programmes you’re currently watching for devices that do not support sign-in. (For signed in users this information will be stored on �鶹Լ�� servers.)
Whether you’ve dismissed in-app messages like TV licence messages
Parental Guidance PIN, secret question and answer
A cookie for beta mode, so we know if you’ve opted to use the testing version of �鶹Լ�� iPlayer

This information will be deleted if you uninstall the �鶹Լ�� iPlayer app.

iPlayer child profiles on connected TV

If you are 18 years or older, as a parent or guardian, you can add child profiles under your account.

Our data shows that most children’s content is watched via an adult’s account. This means that both adults and children are not getting the best possible recommendations or an age appropriate experience from the �鶹Լ��.

Child profiles only show content that’s suitable for under-13s, without the need for a parent or guardian to grant permission.

Your child’s profile is associated with your account. Data collected through the profile is stored under your account.

We will collect this information when you set up a child’s profile under your account:

The profile’s display name
Your child’s date of birth
Your child’s activity data (for example, viewing history). This is to safeguard your child’s wellbeing and offer better recommendations.

How long we keep information

We keep your information as long as the account is active. You can remove data stored on the TV itself by removing your �鶹Լ�� account from the TV.

You can manage or delete your �鶹Լ�� account at any time. Find out more about managing your account. If you choose to delete your �鶹Լ�� account, all personal information will be deleted immediately from �鶹Լ�� servers and the remaining information made anonymous. We might then use it to help us improve our services.

Who is the data controller?

The �鶹Լ�� is the ‘data controller’ of this information. This means that the �鶹Լ�� decides what your personal information is used for, and the ways in which it is processed.

We carry out this processing on the basis of the �鶹Լ��’s legitimate interests in providing a personalised service for audience members. If you don’t want a personalised service, you can turn off ‘allow personalisation’ for your account.

Do I need a TV Licence to use �鶹Լ�� iPlayer?

Yes. A valid TV Licence is required to watch or download any programmes on �鶹Լ�� iPlayer*, on a TV or any device including a phone, tablet or computer.

Doing so without a TV Licence is a criminal offence and you could be prosecuted and fined up to £1000 (or £2000 in Guernsey).

Buy your TV Licence now at the TV Licensing website. You can spread the cost with Direct Debit, or pay in one go. There are also concessions for customers who are blind (severely sight impaired) or over 75 and receiving Pension Credit.

Do I need a TV Licence to watch iPlayer when I’m away from home?

Yes. You are covered to use �鶹Լ�� iPlayer when you’re away from home as long as you have a TV Licence at your home address and the device you’re using isn’t plugged in. If the device is plugged in at a separate address, there needs to be a licence in place at that address.

Can I just watch one programme?

You still need to be covered by a TV Licence. If at any stage you no longer need your TV Licence, you can cancel it and get a refund. Your TV Licence gives you access to everything on �鶹Լ�� iPlayer, including thousands of hours of programmes and box sets.

This privacy notice describes how we collect and use your personal data during and after your relationship with us, in accordance with data protection law.

What will �鶹Լ�� collect and how we will use it?

You need to sign into your �鶹Լ�� account to use the �鶹Լ�� iPlayer app. We will use your account information to send you messages about �鶹Լ�� iPlayer app, such as updates of the iPlayer app Privacy Notice. When you use the �鶹Լ�� iPlayer app, we will collect and process your personal data to provide you with a personalised �鶹Լ�� iPlayer experience, including remembering where you left off and to improve �鶹Լ�� iPlayer service.

Your Watchlist

When you add a programme to your Watchlist, the action gets stored on your device and sent to �鶹Լ�� servers to find out if the programme is currently available on �鶹Լ�� iPlayer. You can remove programmes by tapping Remove.

To remove everything from My Programmes on iOS or Android, go to App Settings > My Programmes > Clear History.

Search history (iOS only)

We think it’s useful to display the programmes you’ve previously searched for within the app, so you can easily find them again. This information is stored on your device only and not sent to the �鶹Լ��.

You can delete your search history by tapping the Clear history button on the search screen. This option is not currently available on Android devices.

Analytics

The �鶹Լ�� uses cookies and similar technologies to understand how audiences interact with our services, content and marketing messages. On iOS and Android, the categories of personal data processed by our data processors include the following:

IP address to determine which UK city/region you are in, or which country/continent you are in if outside of the UK
Activity data, such as the time when you first used this app, and programmes you watched and interacted with
Your device information, such as device type, OS version

For Android devices, the following personal data is also processed:

Which sites referred you to download and use this app
Your �鶹Լ�� Account ID, �鶹Լ�� Account data, type of campaign seen, social media channel used before clicking onto �鶹Լ�� iPlayer will be collected. We will aggregate this personal data for reporting purposes

You can “opt out” from our data processors’ tracking by filling the “Forget My Device” form in this link https://www.appsflyer.com/optout

For Apple devices, we receive aggregated attribution reports from Apple, which are not linked to you or your device. These reports contain no personal data. You can read the Apple Privacy Policy if you want to know more about how Apple uses your personal data, including your device information used to prepare the aggregate reports.

Other information stored on your device

To give you the best �鶹Լ�� iPlayer experience, the following personal data will be stored on your device only:

The last Category you viewed, so we can return you there when you next go to the Categories section
The last Channel you viewed, so we can return you there when you next go to the Channels section
Whether you last viewed the Queue or the Downloaded page, so we can return you there when you next go to the Downloads section
Your current Download Quality setting
Resume positions for programmes you’re currently watching (on the same device)
Whether you’ve confirmed that you’re aged 16 years or over
Whether you’ve dismissed in-app messages, such as suggested app upgrade messages, warnings about network provider charges or TV Licence messages
Downloaded programmes and the downloading and expiry state of those programmes
Parental Guidance Lock PIN, secret question and answer

This above personal data will be deleted if you uninstall the �鶹Լ�� iPlayer app. On Android and Amazon Fire devices, you can also delete this data in the general Settings on your device. Choose Applications, Application manager or Installed Apps, scroll down to �鶹Լ�� iPlayer and tap Clear data or Clear cache (this will also remove all your Downloads).

Push notification

If you choose to receive push notifications and in-app messages, the �鶹Լ�� will use selected data processors to process the personal data listed below on our behalf:

Device ID assigned to your device
The name that you gave us when you registered your �鶹Լ�� account
Activity data, such as programmes you watched and interacted with
�鶹Լ�� user ID associated with your �鶹Լ�� account

Push notifications and in-app messages include series availability, future releases, reminders and related content that may be of interest to you. You can stop receiving push notifications and in-app messages at any time by switching the app or �鶹Լ�� account setting to “off.”

Who is the Data Controller?

The �鶹Լ�� is the “data controller” of the personal data about you. This means that the �鶹Լ�� decides what your personal data is used for, and the ways in which it is processed. For the avoidance of doubt, your personal data will be collected and processed solely for the purposes set out in this privacy notice. As the data controller, the �鶹Լ�� has the responsibility to comply, and to demonstrate compliance with, data protection law.

Lawful basis for processing your personal data

When you use the �鶹Լ�� iPlayer app we have a legitimate interest to process the personal data about you to authenticate your �鶹Լ�� Account, provide you with �鶹Լ�� content, access to the �鶹Լ�� iPlayer app, make a personalised experience as described above and improve your �鶹Լ�� iPlayer experience.

We will also obtain your consent to provide you with personalised emails, such as personalised newsletters. You can sign up to receiving personalised emails and newsletters by turning on the “�鶹Լ�� emails for you” toggle in your account email preferences. You can switch off the toggle anytime to withdraw your consent.

Retaining your information

The �鶹Լ�� will retain the personal data you give us as part of your �鶹Լ�� account for as long as you have an account with us.

Your activity data collected whilst using our products and services will be kept and deleted in accordance with the �鶹Լ��’s retention policies.

Your personal data are stored in the European Economic Area (EEA), US and Israel. If your data is processed outside the UK and the EEA, the �鶹Լ�� will ensure that it is protected to the same standards as if it were being processed within the UK and EEA.

If you are accessing �鶹Լ�� iPlayer through an app, you can delete all �鶹Լ�� iPlayer app data stored on your device by deleting the app.

If you delete your �鶹Լ�� account, your personal data, such as email address, postal code, year or date of birth will be permanently deleted. Any data about how you've used �鶹Լ�� services will be anonymised, and we will no longer be able to identify you from that data.

Sharing your information

When we transfer some limited personal data outside of the European Economic Area (EEA), we make sure that our contracts include safeguards for the transfer of your personal data outside the EEA. The selected data processors listed in this privacy notice have entered an appropriate contract, which ensures they only use your personal data on behalf of the �鶹Լ�� and not independently of the �鶹Լ��.

While a TV licence is required to watch �鶹Լ�� content on �鶹Լ�� iPlayer, you don't need a TV licence to listen to or download radio programmes from �鶹Լ�� Sounds.

Personalisation in �鶹Լ�� iPlayer

Personalisation means we can do things like:

Recommend programmes we think you’ll like
Remember how far through a programme you are
Let you pick up where you left off on any different device
Give you notifications about things you enjoy

At the moment, it isn't possible to change the icon/profile picture on your account.

How do I turn off personalisation?

You can turn off personalisation in your �鶹Լ�� account settings. For more information on how to do this, visit �鶹Լ�� account help.

Bear in mind, it may take a little while for any changes you make to come into effect. But you can speed things up by signing out of your �鶹Լ�� account and signing back in again.

Under 13 years of age?

If you’re under 13, personalisation will be turned off by default. To turn it on, you’ll need to link your �鶹Լ�� account with a parent or guardian's account and get their permission. And the same goes if you want to turn it back off again. Head to the What are child permissions? page on the Using the �鶹Լ�� website to find out more.

How does turning off personalisation affect �鶹Լ�� iPlayer?

You won’t get personalised recommendations any more
Your Watching list in My Programmes won’t work
You won’t be able to pause shows and later pick up where you left off across different devices (eg. pausing on your laptop and resuming on your mobile)
Data about how you use the �鶹Լ�� will be anonymous
You’ll still be able to ‘Add’ programmes, but we won’t use this to personalise things for you
