WISE Women

Local photographers are set to mark International Women's Day.

Inspiring images, moving and still, from a group of pioneering women photographers and young film-makers in Sierra Leone, West Africa, will come together in Hull to mark International Women’s Day 2009.

The event will be held at WISE (Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation) located on Hull's historic High Street on Sunday, March 8.

The centre is part of Hull University and researches into aspects of slavery ,bothΜύ inΜύ history and the present day.

Women photographers

Some of the Sierra Leone photographers

On show will be photographic images surrounding gender issues and daily life in Sierra Leone,Μύ captured by a group of women in Freetown who took part in the Wilberforce Women’s collaborative photography project in 2007.

A core group of these women have since formed the Women’s Photographer’s Organisation Sierra Leone and are using photography to documentΜύ their work, to advocate for change on an issue which affects them, for creative expression, or to try and earn a living.

The event will also feature a lively and thought-provoking selection of short films and footage taken by young people in Freetown, as part of the Cafesociety.org project under the direction of Hull film-maker Jon Robson.
