Spinning the hits

As a club DJ in Hull, Les earned a good living supporting many artists from the world of pop and broadcasting. He also recalls spinning the decks at the wedding of a well known sporting hero.

In addition to running his own mobile disc jockey service, Les always harboured the ambition to be a club disc-jockey (DJ) in one of Hull's nightclubs. He says he was lucky to be in the right place at the right time to achieve his aim. During a night out he approached an employee at a local club with a view to some DJ work.

Initially he was told there were no opportunities available and retreated into the crowd to continue enjoying his evening. An hour later an announcement was made asking that whoever had been asking about DJ work should make themselves known. Given a chance to prove his worth, it wasn't too long before he started life as a club DJ and has happy memories of working in the 'Crystal Goblet' function room.

Although in a full time day job he carried on with his DJ work at night. He says he had a great time working in the clubs, particularly with some of the Radio One DJs of the time. Radio presenters Simon Bates, Gary Davies, Paul Burnett, Tony Blackburn and Bruno Brookes often toured the country doing 'gigs' entertaining crowds up and down the country and making regular trips to Hull.

Les says, his role was to support them during their stage appearances. The radio DJs would mail their 'playlists' to Les ahead of their appearances to ensure their 'shows' ran smoothly. He also worked with touring artists such as Edwin Starr and Kelly Marie.

Les recalls visiting many of the Radio One roadshows around the area. One particular event gave him the chance to meet pop singer Kim Wilde who was making an appearance in the area with former Radio 1 DJ, Gary Davies.Μύ Gary arranged for Les to meet Wilde who was one of Les's idols at the time. He said he was thrilled to meet her but recalls little of their exchange as he was overwhelmed to be so close to such a well known star.

One of Les's cherished mementos was Kim's autograph. Sadly for Les, Kim's autograph along with many of the photographs he took during his DJ days perished in the Hull floods of 2007.

Les's main photograph, features himself and Hull City player Dean Windass at the KC Stadium. It wasn't the first time they'd met. During his DJ days, he says he received an unexpected call and was asked to fill-in for a disc jockey who couldn't make a wedding event.

He said he was surprised to find the event was the wedding celebrations of Hull City football legend Windass and his new bride. Being a devout City fan he was extremely pleased to be a part of a special day which gave him a chance to meet many of his footballing heroes.
