David Smith

David Smith's life has been steeped in religion throughout his life. His evangelical father Leslie has travelled internationally as part of the Sola Ministry. David has also helped organise a visit by musician and evangelist Gus Eyre to Beverley.

David's early life was nomadic as his family travelled the country, moving from place to place to wherever his father's evangelical work took him. David freely admits that the constant shuffling had an impact on his academic career and left him with little formal qualifications upon leaving school.

David's father,ΜύRev. Leslie Smith, who established the Sola Minsistry, came to Hull in the early 1970's and was involved in 'Squat 'n' Learn' as part of the Christian Youth Outreach programme. It was in Hull where David completed his education. He left Andrew Marvell School and started work in a family run photographic shop in the centre of Hull.

David moved on to work in the electrical trade industry. He's been an avid football fan for many years, even during his travels and recalls his dad taking him and his siblings to see Manchester United play at Old Trafford. He recalls the family would take a small wooden podium in pieces and build it after they'd smuggled it into the ground. This was so he and his brothers could stand on it get an unobstructed view of the game.

In later years after moving to this area, he became a supporter of North Ferriby United and also a member of the committee which,Μύ with the help of David's employers at the time, CEC/Plug In Systems, had floodlighting for the ground.

David has continued to support the work of his religious beliefs and supports the Sola Ministry and works closely with the Latimer Memorial Church in Beverley, which this weekend (23rd August at 7pm at the Church on Grovehill Road) has organised a free concert for people in the town.

The Church is pleased to have secured the talents of singer, songwriter and evangelist Gus Eyre who toured with the Christian band Canaan in the early 1970s'. During David's interview, there's a link up with Gus who explains a little of his music-making history and in particular how he combines his musical career with his evangelism. Gus tours the UK and mainland Europe and has been involved in a number of projects helping young people deal with difficult problems.

David has known Gus for many years through his interest in music both secular and Christian. He's looking forward to Gus's performance this weekend. He hopes the people of Beverley will come and enjoy what's on offer. You can hear a sample of Gus's music by visiting his website from the link at the top right hand side of this page.
