The Hay way

Yvonne is a firm believer that we have much more control over our lives than we think. Her own life is a reflection of this philosophy. In her own words she tells us her story.

The picture

"This picture tells of a time in 2000, before the words 'Cosmic Ordering' or 'The Law of Attraction' became the buzzwords we use today. It tells how I overcame all the odds and did something that only a few years earlier would have seemed impossible.

"You see, when I was growing up in the fifties and sixties we were always told, "I want, never gets." It's just the way our parents were brought up and was the only way they knew how to live. The thought that we might actually have some control over what life brought us never entered our heads. Then mum died when I was twelve and yet again the belief that the Universe was in control of my life was confirmed.

"I left home at sixteen and had several moves until I finally settled down in London. It was during this time that I found myself reading more and more self-help books that told me it was my own thoughts that created my life and not some unseen 'force'.

"I moved to Beverley in 1988 and by then, I had read enough of those books to begin to see just how this could be true. I came across a lady called Louise Hay, and her book, 'You Can Heal Your Life'. She confirmed that I could actually alter the course of my life by simply changing the way I thought and felt. And there was a Louise Hay course running in Scarborough the very week after I found her book. Coincidence? I think not!

"I went on that course and realised you could train to be a teacher of this work. So soon I found myself in Ireland doing the teacher training course. Wonderful! And the advanced course would be held in California the following year. Well, I'm not one to stop half-way, so I decided to do some positive thinking, visualisation and asking the Universe for the money to be able to go.

Unfortunate circumstances

"The only way I could find the money was by re-mortgaging the house. My friend in London 'phoned me to say that he had to go into hospital just before I was due to travel and would I go down and look after him afterwards.

"My car was a wreck and the thought of the 200 mile drive wasn't making me feel good. But if the re-mortgage came, I could buy a second-hand car, pay my air fare and course fees. And if I travelled from Gatwick I could just about manage to get myself to London to do the 'nurse' thing on the Friday and then get to Gatwick in time to catch a plane to California on the Sunday.

"I couldn't book my air tickets or let the course facilitators know I was going, as I didn't find out if the re-mortgage had gone through right until the day before I was due to travel! So on that day, I took the call from the mortgage company, bought a car, 'phoned my friend to say I'd be coming, organised my plane tickets and drove to London.

The long haul

"But I'd made up my mind I was going. And guess what? I did. The photo shows me (in the middle) receiving my Louise Hay Advanced Teacher's certificate in San Diego at the end of a wonderful week. Now I teach Louise Hay workshops, run other groups, do personal coaching and Reiki too. Just goes to show what you can do when you put your mind to it.
