Kathryn and Charlie- 'the wonder dog'

When Kathryn got her first dog, a boxer, she was an average pet owner. Going about her daily business with her companion proving no trouble at all. However, when 'Charlie' her second dog came on the scene, her interest in canine behaviour increased significantly.

Lurcher Charlie had problems which meant it was difficult to take him out in public. Deciding that she needed help to deal with his behavioural difficulties she set about training him.

This led to Kathryn taking a much greater interest in canine behaviour and training so enrolled in a two year HNC course of study to increase her knowledge. She's been training dogs for eight years and says it's challenging and rewarding work. Every animal has it's own personality and often it's a case that the owners have to adjust their own behaviour too in order have to an impact on how their dog behaves.

She spent three years teaching dog training at the Spring Bank Dog Training Club in Hull. When the previous owner of the club retired she took over the club giving it a new name; 'paws4training'. Training takes place on Monday nights at the Spring Bank Community Centre with the help of a colleague. The courses cover the basics but there's an opportunity to learn more advanced techniques. Kathryn additionally provides one-to-one training for those who'd like training away from a class environment.

Kathryn keeps her interest up to date by absorbing any information she can on training and behavioural techniques involving canines. Although she has no ambition to take part in professional agility shows she's says helping other animals and their owners lead happier lives is reward in itself. Charlie is responsible for this major change to her life and interests and without him her life would have perhaps followed a very different course.
