Ray Rumkee

Saturday Breakfast's TV reviewer tells all about his armchair hobby.

Ray Rumkee

Everyone talks about the great TV shows of the past, what about the truly awful ones?

The Sopranos – over-praised tosh; The Jeremy Kyle Show – surely, one of the Bible’s signs of the End of the World; Little Miss Jocelyn – literally unwatchable. There’s three for you. My problem is that most of the shows people regard as awful, I REALLY like.

Which TV star would you put on a pedestal....or in the stocks?

Johnny Ball on the pedestal for encouraging kids to think that being clever was a good thing.

Gordon Ramsey would be in the stocks. He’s no doubt a great chef but the casualness of his foul mouth is one of those things degrading public discourse. Get yourself a f* vocabulary, man!

What would be your perfect TV show?

‘Doctor Who’ starring ME!

Is video-on-demand killing TV as a shared experience?

No. If there are shows on that the family want to watch together, they will. The problem is that they’re now few and far between.

Why are US shows dominating our schedule?

They dominate the satellite and Channel 5 schedules but Â鶹ԼÅÄ ONE, TWO, ITV and Channel 4 are remarkably free of US stuff. Just look in your Radio Times.

Have you got a really good telly?

It’s OK but if Radio Humberside want to spring for a 70 inch plasma jobby as payment for my Saturday morning sacrifices, I wouldn’t cry.

Have you got a telly chair that nobody else is allowed to sit in?

No. I sit on the sofa next to my girlfriend. We hold hands. It’s nice.

Favourite line/catchphrase?

‘NOBODY EXPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION!â€

Who is the greatest ever TV character?

No question – Doctor Who in all of his regenerations.

Which TV character do you most identify with?

I’d like to say ‘Doctor Who’ but, increasingly, it’s Cleggy in ‘Last of the Summer Wine’

Which TV character do you most look/act like?

When I’m at work, I’d like to think of myself as a Tom Baker tribute act.

Favourite place in the whole world?

Where the people I love are. If I can’t have that answer, I’d have to say the British countryside.

What's your favourite food and music combination?

Fried eggs on toast and British Progressive Rock from the 1970s.
