Springwatch SWAT: Humber Hike

Springing into action

Find out more about the latest winners of the Humberside Police Lifestyle Challenge.

The Brough Babes team were winners of last year's Humberside Police Lifestyle Award; a project that encourages young people to get involved with their local communities.

The girls set up a six-mile walk from Brough to the Humber Bridge, along the banks of the Humber estuary.

The group did extensive research about the local wildlife and the environmental impact of the walk.

The walk was set up in response to requests by locals, as one of the Brough Babes, Jodie Burow explains.Μύ β€œWe picked it because we did a questionnaire that went out at the local schools to see what people wanted, and it came out as a free facility for people to enjoy as a family and exercise more. So we thought this would be a good place as we came down here to walk our dogs.”

They set up signposts along the route, sadly some of the locations were vandalised and the signs stolen.

With the help of the ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Springwatch campaign the route was tidied up and new signs put in place.

The girls were joined for the big clean-up by dozens of volunteers, including local residents and members of the St John (Newland) Scout Troop.

As well as tidying up rubbish the helpers added bird boxes, hedgehog homes and plants designed to encourage butterflies and other insects.

Another of the Brough Babes, Carrie Burow, hopes that the weekend’s hard work will encourage more people to use the walk. β€œWe’re just trying to promote this and just make sure it is bigger and better and that people keep on using it and it’s just not going to be wasted.”
