Steve Smith

Photography is proving to be an absorbing hobby for Steve Smith who's intent on honing his skills on location and in the studio. He's also encouraging people to send him their old photos.

Steve's grandfather was a keen amateur photographer. He recalls that as a young boy of five he would accompany his granddad taking snaps on his own camera. Although he didn't get into the darkroom to develop his own snaps he still loved taking pictures.

Although having an interest in photography for some years, he didn't take it quite as seriously until a few years ago when he bought a camera and took up his childhood interest once more with renewed vigour and enthusiasm. He started to take his hobby much more seriously and started researching how to take better pictures.

In order to develop his interest further he looked around for a photographic club to join and he discovered the Hull Photographic Society of which he is now a member.

The society was founded in 1884 and welcomes people of all abilities. There are various groups within the society which cater for specialised interests. For example there are audio visual,Μύ digital workshop, portrait and print groups amongst many others. The society also organises members nights, competitions and for speakers to talk to members about photography.

Steve says he's learned much from taking part. His interest focuses on two main areas: studio photography and location photography, as you can see from the examples on this page. Steve says in addition to being a member of the club he's learned a great deal from the college course he's been following.

He's particularly interested in studio work and working with models which the society organises for its members. He says it's quite challenging to get the right shot, but experience is the best teacher. Steve's main picture was taken at Hessle Foreshore and the others are examples of his location work. These include some crab pots he took a picture of on the coast and also a 'window scene'.

Steve is hoping to launch a new photography project shortly and he's asking people to send him original pictures of Hull through the years He's going to publish them on a web page along with shots of the same location in the present day to show how the city has changed over the years. If you've any pictures you'd like to share you can contact Steve through the email link below.
