Gavin 'Bod' Bodill

Driffield's skateboard, inline skate and BMX park was a dream seven years ago. But thanks to the work of a dedicated commitee made up of local people that dream is a reality which attracts interest from all over the country.

Gavin Bodill or 'Bod' has been a fan of skateboarding since 1987. A friend of his announced he was getting a skateboard for Christmas and Gavin decided that he'd get one too. From that time he was hooked. Although for many people such activities are a phase they go through, 20 years on Gavin is still using his board. He says the skateboard itself has changed over the years as it's developed using more robust and lighter materials. During his interview he talks about the long history of skateboarding and how it grew out of the surfer cult in the United States.

Today Gavin in addition to his regular job, he has another as a Skateboard and BMX supervisor at Skateopia, Driffield's Skateboard, Inline Skating and BMX park. A position he's held for the last four years. He says it's a dream come true. He gets paid for doing something he thoroughly enjoys. In his interview he describes, how the building of the park was a community effort.

Around 2001 there was renewed interest in skateboarding and many parents in the area were concerned their children had nowhere to practice in a controlled environment. A committee was set up to raise funds for a park. At all stages during the development of the park, the young people of Driffield and district were consulted.

After a great deal of effort, on Valentine's Day 2004, the park was finally opened. The park is staffed by Gavin and his colleagues and the money raised through admissions is used to support the park. It's hoped that one day sufficient funds will be raised to enable the park to have a roofed section.

As for the picture, this caped crusader is a regular visitor to the park to use the facilities and his identity is kept a secret. Gavin says there's quite a 'wow' factor amongst the youngsters when the winged one is using the park and performing stunts and tricks. Gavin says it all adds up to a fun experience, although he says anyone who takes up skateboarding is bound to suffer a few scrapes along the way.
