Brent Read

Brent Read began his musical career in Hull at the age of eight when he started playing the clarinet.

A performing police band 470

Moving on from this early beginning he went on to play in a number of ensembles of the Hull City Music Service and later with the City Youth Concert Band and The City of Hull Youth Orchestra.

He was just seventeen when he was invited to join the Humberside Police Band and became a regular member of the clarinet section travelling back to Hull on a regular basis whilst studying to further his teaching career. From 1980, for a quarter of a
century he held the post of solo clarinet with the band whilst also contributing to many other bands in South and West Yorkshire.

In his professional life, he became Head of Music at Penistone Grammar school, but still travelled regularly to play with the band. In 2005, he became the Humberside band's Musical Director. Since then he's been promoting young players through the
formation of a Junior band. Many of these young musicians who come through are the children of existingΜύband members.

Brent feels extremely proud whenever he represents the band, whether that is marching in front of them at events such as the annual Remembrance Parade or conducting them at the many concert performances throughout the year. His proudest
moment to date was conducting the band at the first ever Luxembourg International Military Tattoo in May 2007.

As well as performing to a sell out crowd of over 4000, the event was also broadcast to over 6.5 million TV viewers in Luxembourg and Belgium. The photograph shows the band marching into formation before beginning their static performance.
