Brigg Amateur Social Historians

There's a group of people in Brigg who call themselves the Brigg Amatuer Social Historians or BASH. The group came about in October 2003 to promote an interest and awareness of the local social history of Brigg and it's surrounding area.

The group's secretary, Pat Parkinson reveals in her interview that BASH's origins started as a regular Friday get together in The White Horse, a local pub. It wasn't long before the group became so large they had to change venues and made more formal arrangements to organise events. Pat recalls their first event, a talk which attracted many more people than they expected and subsequent talks brought in even larger numbers.

The aim of the group is to promote Brigg as a tourism hotspot and they do this by organising ghost walks and social events such as dances. In May, a live swing band has been brought in for a special supper recalling the 1940s and it's been arranged for a fly past by aeroplanes from Bomber Command. A Lancaster bomber a Spitfire and a Hurricane will fly over the town at around 7.30pm to start proceedings.

One of the main activities of the group is a regular ghost walk. The main picture shows people about to embark on a typical walk. Since the walks were started many people have come forward to tell of their 'ghostly experiences' in places like Wrawby Street and Queen Street. There's been a number of interesting sightings from members of the public which after investigation have revealed more about the history of Brigg. The walks have attracted many from outside the local area with people travelling from as far away as Norwich and Manchester to take part.

The committee has organised a new event for the summer, pump dressing. The town has two non-functioning but no less important pumps around which a ceremony will take place. The pumps are to be dressed in flowers and the Grimsby Morris Men will be in attendance.

Pat hopes that after her retirement she and a other members of the committee will start to record the history of Brigg in a more formal fashion to ensure that the history, characters and charm of Brigg is not forgotten.
