The Ferriby Four

Phil Blogg, a retired police officer, Andy Chaiken, a retired bank manager, Steve Lindow, a consultant obsterician and Martyn Wood the owner of a sign making firm have ridden hundreds of miles raising money for various charities along the way.

'The Ferriby Four' as they're known have an international bike ride in their sights in their latest venture to help support the RNLI's Train One, Save Many appeal.

The group got together playing snooker some years ago, meeting on a Friday at 'the Legion' to unwind over a drink. Although initially six cyclists were involved the Ferriby Four of today are the core who have remained to support their charitable endeavours.

One of their first rides was for the charity, 'FAMILEY' a local charity supporting women and babies. The idea was to raise money for people in this area as the group felt enough money wasn't coming to this area from some of the national charities. Their trek took them from Newcastle to Edinburgh. In this picture you can see the famous landmark Edinburgh Castle.

Health charities have benefited considerably from the hundreds of miles they've ridden. One ride in support of a breast cancer charity took them, coast to coast, riding from Liverpool to Hull.

The main pictures sees the riders setting off from North Ferriby on their way to Norfolk, this time raising money for the ME Society. Rides are long and arduous and not without incident. One such incident saw a tyre have a blow out with spectacular results which damaged the wheel of one of their bikes seemingly beyond repair. But a replacement was found and they were able to continue on their way.

At the end of May, the men are on their bikes once more. This time raising money in support of the RNLI. A 55 mile journey sees them cycling from Flamborough to Spurn Point. They'll be visiting Bridlington and Withernsea stations along the way.

Two weeks later, they'll be boarding a P&0 North Sea ferry to travel to Europort and cycling a 165 mile circular route which will take in a number of Dutch lifeboat stations. Phil who since retiring from the Police force now works for P&0 on board ship and has seen first hand how important the work of the RNLI is. They've been called on a number of times to take ill or injured passengers ashore when they needed treatment.

Despite the distance involved they say that their challenge will be made slightly easier by the system of flat cycle paths that traverse Holland.

The four are keen to praise the work of the behind the scenes fundraisers who work tirelessly to drum up support for their riding efforts and are thankful for the sponsorship afforded to them including Barclays and P&O ferries in addition to the support they receive from a former cyclist with the group.
