Stuart Walker

This staunch Canaries fan sings the praises of his beloved Norwich City but this football crazy fan also supports a team hoping to skate its way to success.

Becoming a sports' journalist and writer seemed a natural step for the young man who along with his twin brother had the privilege of being a mascot during the 1985/86 season, when Norwich took the Second Division title. However, Stuart says it was unfortunate that the only home game his team lost was the one where he and his brother were mascots.

Stuart always wanted to be a journalist. Stuart's father was the Norwich City writer for the Eastern Evening news and would take him to numerous games and recalls that he just fell in love football. Going out with his dad, he'd write his own 'reports', which always ended with huge victory for Norwich, he says: "they'd always win 15-nil". The family moved up to East Yorkshire when he was only ten when his father became the Sports Editor of the Hull Daily Mail.

The day before Stuart's seventeenth birthday he landed a dream job with the Driffield Post as Sports Editor. The role was very demanding but proved a valuable training ground as he's moved on in his career. Being a relatively small newspaper, he found himself at the centre of the paper's sports output. Writing and gathering reports, he'd also lay out the paper and had overall responsibility for the look and feel of what was being produced. In less than two years he moved to the Hull Daily Mail and shortly after that moved to the Press Association (PA) based in Howden. As a Sports Editor, he looks after 'Football 24', which follows the Football League clubs.

Although having a keen interest in many sports, apart from football, there's one other that grabs his attention more than the rest. In 1988, his dad took him to see his first ice hockey game featuring the Humberside Seahawks and he was hooked. It was a high scoring game then and he was impressed by the speed and agility of the players and the high level of aggression displayed by the team members. He was hooked. Living in Driffield in those early years it was difficult for him to get to the games, but when he moved to the Hull Daily Mail, it was easier as he became the reporter for the team now called the Kingston Hawks.

For the last five years, he's been the media manager for the current team, the Hull Stingrays. Covering ice hockey for PA and following GB coach Rick Strachan, has taken him to many international venues, including, France, Hungary and Switzerland. He says ice hockey faces a difficult time, as venues are limited and the venues that are available are often used for ice shows and concerts making scheduling of games very difficult.

Stuart enjoys his job and with a young family he's happy in his current role, which feeds his passion for all things sport.
