The James Dean Syndrome

The James Dean Syndrome

The Hull band, 'The James Dean Syndrome' are not only into their music but the arts too. Musically their style encompasses, big beat, psychedelic and blues.

The James Dean Syndrome are four young guys from Hull who are hoping to have successful music careers. They came together toward the end of 2006.Μύ Previously three of the band, John Winn, Dom Abbott and Carl Macklin were in the group Revolver, but when one member of the band left they were joined by Johnny Seymour who completes the current line-up and changed their musical direction, whilst retaining some of the base elements of their style.

The band started out doing covers, but have moved on to writing and performing their own material. Although a collaborative effort, John Winn who's studying for a music degree at Hull University has taken a creative composition lead, but other members of the band contribute just as much in terms of energy, enthusiasm and support.

The individual band members are united in their love of all types of music and with youth on their side, it's perhaps surprising to learn that they cite their musical influences which range from Syd Barrett, Velvet Underground, John Lee Hooker, B.B King, The Animals to the Beach Boys.

Although the band is still relatively young they're widening their experience by getting as many gigs as they can around Hull, and play regularly at the New Adelphi, but also further afield including Doncaster and Leeds. The band have recorded a number of tracks which they've engineered and mixed themselves at the Hull University studios.

The band are hoping to recreate the feel of the 'sixties' pop/psychedelia era with a series of 'Happenings'. Informal gatherings for people to mill about and enjoy some music in a really relaxed atmosphere combined with a 'art' element involving the projection of images within the performance.

The band's name is a reflection and tribute to many of their idols who died at a young age before (in their opinion) reaching their full potential. Although fans will be relieved to learn they have no plans to make the ultimate sacrifice in emulating their heroes.

As for their picture , this was something they put together quickly for a publicity photo. It was photographed during the summer floods in Hull in 2007, hence the creative use of sandbags within the shot.

Gig details, blogs and tracks from the band can be found on the band's MySpace site. You can also hear the band members in their recent interview with Steve Redgrave on the Late Show.
