Andy Hampel

What do Pete Townshend, spacehoppers and some blokes from Hull have in common? Andy Hampel revealed the answer on Every Picture Tells a Story.

Andy HampelΜύ teaches multimedia, 3D and graphic design at Bishop Burton College. But he has another side to him, he has a thing for comedy. Using some of the latest technologies available, he expresses his passion for writing and filmmaking in many different ways.

Around eleven years ago, Andy teamed up with Sean Wilson after discovering they had a mutual interest in Dr. Who and the Monty Python team. Since then, they've joined forces with The Hull Blokes and in addition to writing and performing Andy has been involved in the more practical side of being with the group. This ranges from making props and films for use at various events to performing.

Andy is fascinated by animation and reveals traditional methods of producing animation for him are far too time consuming. Instead he uses technology to hasten the process. Much of his work can be found on YouTube. There are some links to some of his work at the top right hand side of this page.

During his interview, Andy tells why he was inspired to make a film based on the public information films that were frequently shown on television in the seventies and eighties. In 'Dump Your Fridge' he suggests an interesting use for old fridges in an effort to socially engineer society.

Andy's claim to fame is that his work was spotted by Pete Townshend of rock band, The Who. Andy did a remake of a scene from The Who's film Quadrophenia with a twist. Seventies children's toy favourite the Spacehopper was used for comic effect in an encounter between mods and rockers.

Andy reveals in his interview how a stretch of shingle in East Yorkshire was used to recreate the seafront at Brighton. He interspersed the Spacehopper shots with some footage he took in Brighton on a home camcorder. Some of the other work he's been involved with, has been shown at the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Film Festival '07 and on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ 2 and their work saw them as finalists in the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Comedy Soup competition.

Andy and Sean are members of Urban Artz and they host and perform at the monthly Off the Road shows held at the New Adelphi in Hull. They are also event managers and organisers for the Hull Comedy Festival. Last year, hey created 'Green Helmet Day' based on a logo for the festival. through their film making efforts they raised Β£700 for Macmillan Cancer Relief.

Currently they are working on 'Film Fun-Medical Mayhem' for May 2008 in addition to this year's Hull Comedy Festival, both Andy and Sean continue to support The Hull Blokes.

With regard to his chosen picture Andy says: "The photo is from two boxes of photo albums I bought at Walton Street market (in Hull) , and cover about 30 years of someone's life. I collect anything and everything. The photo is about lots of things I love. Space-age design, the 1970s, popular culture, and the humour of people taking pictures of buffets."
