Gus during his 'silly' phase

Gus Wilson

As a member of the Humberside Police's Major Investigatons team, Gus Wilson has seen some sights to make your toes curl. These days, he's involved in something quite different but still helping the community.

Gus says of his picture: "It was taken in 1976 when I was seventeen.Μύ It marked the end of an era.Μύ My friends and I were into Monty Python’s Flying Circus and much of the obscure prog rock of the time.Μύ We'd spend time at each other’s houses playing music and being silly. All of that was to change with the arrival of punk rock and our eighteenth birthdays. After that it was all Clash, Sex Pistols and Stranglers, the pub and being angry. You can also just make out the swap of musical instruments in the picture, the flute on the bookcase or the guitars in the foreground."

"When most of my friends left for university I stayed in Hull. I didn't want a career, I wanted to be a bass player in a rock band. After five years trying and an unsuccessful single I knew this was not to be and went back to studying. Two degrees later I ended up working for Humberside Police in the Major Investigation Team. Over a twelve year period I was involved in working on helping to solve many of the infamous crimes in the force's (Humberside) region from murders to bank robberies. The team did everything; training, incident room work and even videoing crime scenes and post mortem examinations."

"I left in 2000 to take up my current role with the children’s charity Barnardos where I am the IT manager for the Yorkshire Region. I'm often surprised how similar detectives and social workers are."

Of his work with The Hull Blokes, he's been with them for nearly four years. He's done quite a bit of writing for the group and finds it incredibly rewarding.

We asked him if he'd ever considered writing a crime novel given his background. He said he would love to but says advances are being made so quickly in the area of crime detection that he fears any novel he writes might be out of date before it came to publication and prides himself on his accuracy.
