Wayne Dewsbury

These days Wayne Dewsbury's adrenalin is fuelled by creative writing, but for 35 years or more he was driven by the need to play football.

Up until the last few years, when not at work you would have seen Wayne Dewsbury in his football strip. He's played the game with a passion man and boy and that's reflected in some of the personal photos he brought along to our studios for Every Picture Tells a Story.

These days apart from his work in the financial field, one of his 'goals' is to write some stirring prose to get the adrenalin flowing in a different direction. He describes himself as; "being keen but rubbish", in his footballing skills.

Wayne's interest in sport started at a young age, his dad was a pub landlord and although his dad was a keen rugby player, Wayne was drawn to football. The two footballing pictures show Wayne at the beginning and end of his footballing 'career'.

In the early picture, Wayne is standing on the far left of the picture. Wayne recalls playing for the B team with Swinemoor Primary school when he lived in Beverley as a young boy before he and his family moved to North Yorkshire. During his interview, Wayne speaks about all he ever wanted to do was play football. During his working week, he'd be constantly fixated on the next Saturday afternoon game of footie. If you listen to the interview, you'll discover the identity of one person in the picture who went on to have a professional footballing career.

In the main photo Wayne is featured with the rest of his team mates in a shot taken for the Harold Robinson Cup Final. Wayne is second from right on the bottom row. He had suffered an injury shortly before the game was due to be played and he worked hard to make sure that he made the team in order to play in the game. Despite his efforts, although he got to play in the game in 2002, his team, the Molescroft Rangers lost out. This proved to be a turning point, because due to his injured shoulder he decided to give up playing and devote his energies elsewhere.

The focal point for his interests turned out to be getting involved with the writing and performing group, The Hull Blokes. Although Wayne by his own admission is not as prolific as some of the other members of the group, he's still proud of the work he produces. His interest in working with the group gathered steam when he was asked to sing in the chorus at some of the early performances and even though his experience up to that time was quite limited he embraced the opportunity.

Man and woman on stage 203

In this shot of Wayne here with this black curly wig, he was playing the part of singer Tom Jones. This performance was based on the premise that Tom Jones was arrested for the murder of Delilah The theme was taken from one of Tom Jones' most well known tracks called Delilah.

Man on stage 203

In this picture, Wayne delivers a monologue, called 'Modern Love is Rubbish'. This concerned an unfortunate man who was somewhat unlucky in love and decided that the only way to find a lover was to commit a murder and go to prison to get the attention of women who were attracted to this kind of character.
