The Hull Male Voice Choir has been going strong since 1911, although as honorary secretary and singer Reubin Hird freely admits some of the choir members have a few years behind them, none of them have been with the choir since then.

In his interview, Reubin explains how the choir started out as a 'glee club', a term which has fallen out of favour these days. In the early days, membership was severely restricted but after the second world war its ranks were allowed to swell. The choir in its earlier days attracted some nationally known guest vocalists including Kathleen Ferrier, the Blackburn born singer who died in the 1950s but was recognised for her superb contralto voice.

Reubin talked about his working life before his retirement. He was involved with the health records department for what was known as the county of Humberside. He was in constant contact with health professionals across what is now known as East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire. Dealing with the records of around 800,000 people in the days before computers was a large task for Reubin and his co-workers.

At the start of the century, the choir made a CD and in his interview, Reubin talks about what's so special about the the arrangement to the Beatles song, 'When I'm 64'. He had to get the agreement of the song's publishers to allow them to change this pop masterpiece.

The choir has not limited itself to performing on these shores and he tells of when the choir went to Holland to sing at a special event which proved moving and in some parts amusing. On the ferry trip across the North Sea, passengers enjoyed an impromptu concert given by the chaps much to everyone's surprise and delight.

Reubin says that the choir is always on the look out for new members, he says prospective members don't have to be able to read music and he confesses that he can't read a note. If you're interested he's happy for you to join their Wednesday night rehearsals in Hull. He can be contacted on 01482 656869.
