Late Night Pharmacy in Hull

Netty Sergeant

Netty Sergeant works in one of Hull's most unusual buildings.

In this edition of Every Picture Tells a Story, Netty Sergeant tells us about the history of the building which is occupied by the firm that she works for. She also explains how the role of the pharmacy in the community has changed greatly in recent times, which in part explains the current role for this former tax inspector.

The old 'Annison funeral directors' building at the junction of Witham and Great Union Street in Hull, is one of Hull's most historic buildings. Currently, 2000 ft2 of the site is occupied by 'Hull Late Night Pharmacy'. Netty works as a business coordinator with the company, an independent local pharmacy which has been at its present site since the autumn of last year.

Late Night Pharmacy

The historical site of the pharmacy

The building has been around for some considerable time and one of its astonishing features is the first floor stables to the rear of the building which are still accessible by the original ramp. The mounted police were once housed here and an assortment of other businesses have inhabited different parts of the building over the years including a photographers and hairdressers. By some peculiar quirk, some of the building is once again taken up with these types of businesses.

The building has special significance to the city of Hull as it formed part of the citadel area. With so much history behind it and the usage the building has had over the years, it's perhaps unremarkable that a visit by a local 'ghostbusters' team revealed they recorded one of the highest levels of electromagnetic energy their equipment had ever recorded.

Netty sees her role as very much developing the company'sΜύlinks with other organisations where there is as much a social need as the practical need given that the the company is committed to providing a service when few others do not and cites, their opening even on Christmas Day as part of their commitment to the local community.
