Amy Grainger runs her own business aiming to offer mothers of babies and young children an alternative to some of the less environmentally friendly products available on the shelves.

One of the biggest responsibilities a person can have is that of bringing up a baby. The experiences in the first few months of life are ones that can affect dramatically what people will be like in later years. Amy is mother to her young son and is keen to help people get off on the right foot. Amy is also a mum with an eye on saving the planet, and suggests being a mother also make the responsibility even greater.

Amy says: "My chosen picture means a lot to me and is my favourite of me and my son together, and as he is the inspiration behind all I do. I'm a single mum to Jayhan, now two, and had him just after finishing my degree, obviously having him changed my life.

"Since his birth I have trained to become a breastfeeding supporter which means I help other mums who may be having problems. I do talks on the benefits of breastfeeding and through this work found out about 'real nappies' and have since started my own business to help mums find great products that don't harm the environment. I'm very into the natural approach with children and life in general".

Amy is based in Barton but went to Hull University to study English.Μύ It was during her final year and about to take her final exams that she discovered she was pregnant with Jayhan. Amy's career aspirations focused on teaching but when Jayhan came along she found herself taking a different path.

Having been based in Leicester, Amy became a breastfeeding peer supporter after attending the course herself.Μύ The training helped bring her closer to Jayhan and she was keen to offer support to other mothers considering breastfeeding as an option.

When Amy returned to Barton she was surprised by the reaction she received when taking Jayhan about the town in his 'sling' which features in her photograph. She received a lot of queries and it wasn't long before she started her own business of selling alternative baby products.

One of the things that Amy is passionate about is 'real nappies' as an alternative to disposal nappies. She claims that real nappies are more environmentally friendly than disposals, even taking into account the cost of cleaning nappies in terms of energy consumption and materials. She also says they're a lot more fun and come in all colours and styles.

To promote her wares, Amy organises 'baby fairs' one of which is taking place in Barton on the first weekend of December at the Water's Edge centre. In addition to the fairs, Amy also visits mothers' support groups and makes home visits.
