Scarlet Lights: Hull based theatre group

Scarlet Lights

We meet a five woman theatrical group from Hull who are hoping to make the big time.

What do you get when you put five mid-twenties women who are members of a theatrical/comedy group called Scarlet Lights into a radio studio late at night?

Lots of laughs from the participants that's for sure. Scarlet Lights, are Kerrie Marsh, Lucy Thurlow, Caroline Block, Emma Wilson and Louisa Hutchinson.

These young women all met on a performing arts course at Hull College and it was Easter last year when they decided to get together as a theatrical group to put on shows.

Lucy lectures in Performing Arts at Hull College as does Louisa and Kerrie. Caroline also lectures and works with the entry level students at the college. Louisa is a fitness instructor who teaches drama and dance to people with mental health and behavioural problems. Emma is currently working in retail.

As friends they've worked together at college and have known each other for many years in some cases a decade and Scarlet Lights just seemed to 'happen'.

They're a new theatrical group and their first gig, as they like to call their performances, is still fresh in their minds. They took part in Party off the Road at the Adelphi and have also taken part in the Buzz Comedy Night in Beverley. They also organised their first solo gig recently at the Sailmakers' Arms in Hull from which their picture is taken. Their first gig at the Adelphi filled them with some trepidation and despite some initial misgivings the performance went ahead and much to their delight was well received.

Their picture was taken shortly before their first performance which received a complimentary review in the Hull Daily Mail which suggested there was some mileage in what they have to offer. When asked about how they got their initial bookings they spoke of how usingΜύ MySpace has been instrumental in pushing the name of Scarlet Lights forward.

The show they're currently performing is called 'Sheality'. Caroline Block said: "Sheality is a piece, that reflects women's take on reality. So there's lots of different characters in there...we've got bunny boilers, but like my friends say, we should change the title into 'Fat, bitter and desperate', which is another take on it. Basically, it's about a girl becoming a woman". The show reflects something of what goes on in the lives of the individual members of the group. They talk about themselves and their relationships with men.

Although they haven't set out to be a comedy group, they were surprised by how much audiences seem to enjoy the comedy aspect of what they do. They don't see the show as a sketch show, more of a series of comedic scenes with a link. They cite their influences as Victoria Wood, Julie Walters, French and Saunders, Bill Hicks, South Park, Comic Strip, Bottom, The Office and Steve Coogan.

Scarlet Lights are ambitious actresses and writers who would love the opportunity to work on the project full time.

In December, the group are diversifying a little and putting on a spoof musical at the Adelphi but also appearing at the Haworth Arms in a variety show.
