Two people on the pitch at Elland Road.

Ann on the pitch at Elland Road

Ann Lowde

Ann Lowde was inspired to pick up pen and paper after she held her first child in her arms. Since then her verses and song lyrics have been used to help local charites and help her set up her own business.

Ann Lowde started writing after her daughter arrived. She describes the event as being filled with emotion and was overtaken by an urge to put down into words her feelings.ΜύBefore that time Ann had taken little interest in writing. Ann had waited a long time for a child and this was to be the inspiration for a new interest and outlook on life.

She now mainly has a hobby, runs her own business called Personal Verses and writes messages on behalf of people, be it weddings or bereavement she always manages to find the words on behalf of those struggling for something to say.

Before starting her hobby Ann was a manageress at a branch of the local bakery chain, Skeltons which no longer trades. Ann enjoys the retail environment and now works in a local charity shop.

A moving moment for Ann Lowde

The story behind the photo of her at Elland Road, the ground of Leeds United, has an emotional attachment too. She says she wrote a lyric for a song about Leeds United. She was in the kitchen washing up with her father at the time who he said how wonderful it would be if the song could be sung at the stadium. Brushing it off at the time, it wasn't until her father died unexpectedly just a couple of weeks later and she thought more about what he'd said.

She says she didn't deal with the loss of her father very well. Sometime later a man called Gary Luntley came in to the charity shop where she worked and just happened to say that he was able to pick up a guitar and write music. Ann said she had a similar 'gift' for writing poem and rhymes.

She offered a challenge to Gary and that was for him to set to music the words that Ann had written some time before about Leeds United. Two days later a song was made and sent to Leeds United. They responded by saying they were interested in making the song their official song. Ann wanted to hear the song at the ground and 'pestered' the club to have it played.

Ann was invited on to the pitch and it was announced that they would play the song to the crowd in memory of her father. She described the feeling of standing there as 'awesome'.Μύ From that chance meeting Gary it took a year to Ann standing on that pitch.

Ann has also been involved in the making of a CD about Driffield, in East Yorkshire. It was sometime after that once again someone came in to the charity shop. They suggested she write a song for Driffield.

Rising to the challenge she wrote a poem and then got in contact with Gary once more to see if he could write some music to go with the lyric. The local opera society were invited to appear on the record which they duly did. Money from the sale of 'Song for Driffield' raised Β£850 for the Marie Curie Cancer charity.

The CD Ann wrote the lyrics for

Her most recent CD containing five tracks (released November 2007) is a collaboration with Graham Long with part of the proceeds going to the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's Children in Need appeal and was recorded in Beeford in East Yorkshire.

The second track on the CD is called 'She Still Loves You', Ann wrote the original lyrics some years ago and sent itΜύ to one of her musical heroes, Daniel O'Donnell. As there was no music for the song Daniel was unable to use it but contacted Ann to offer his thanks for submitting it to him.

When Graham, who's a market trader in Driffield took the song away to write and record some music for it, Ann was most surprised to learn that it was he who was singing on the track.Μύ On the final CD release which was checked by the people involved with Children in Need, Graham sings and plays all the instruments himself.

The CD for Children in Need is available through Ann's website.
