The inside of Holy Trinity Church in Hull

Serena Derrett

Making beautiful music is one of the aims of this Director of Music at Hull's Holy Trinity Church. Serena Derrett is looking to bring to the fore some of the best of the region's talented voices and she wants you to join in.

Serena is Director of Music at Holy Trinity Church, Hull at the largest parish church in the UK (by area) and has the largest parish church organ in the UK.

Serena said:" My father is from Hull so I feel I have some genuine roots here.Μύ I have a background in church music going back over 35 years.Μύ My last choir, in Stroud, Gloucestershire had radio and television work and regularly sang in cathedrals, including whole weeks of covering for cathedral choirs during the summer holidays".

She added: "Since taking over as Director of Music in January 2007 I have been putting plans in place to give Holy Trinity a large and active music department.Μύ Currently there are 60 people actively involved in a range of choirs and other groups and an extensive programme of concerts is being arranged for next year.

"I am always recruiting and am keen to spread the word about what is going on at Holy Trinity, especially with the music and to encourage new people to get involved.Μύ Many people have entirely the wrong idea about what is needed to become part of a choir".

Serena is very proud of some of the choir members' achievements, she said: "The recent finals of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 2 Choir Girl of the Year involved one of the Holy Trinity girls, thirteen-year old Hannah-Leigh Hopper, who was one of four girls from choirs nationwide who sang for the adjudicators at St. Paul's cathedral in London".

The participants had to perform a sacred song and a hymn in front of a live audience and a judging panel chaired by celebrated composer John Rutter and featuring Katharine, Duchess of Kent, celebrity vocal coach Carrie Grant and singer Jonathan Ansell (formerly of vocal group G4).

Serena is keen to attract new members to the various currently active choirs at the church. Full details can be found at the Holy Trinity Church website. You can also find out details of forthcoming musical events. The choirs are especially busy around Christmas and this year will be no exception.
