Grimsby's alternative high

The rain kept away and hundreds of young people flocked to Grimsby YMCA for a creative day full of fun and sometimes risky youth activities on the first Saturday in July.

The community project titled "Alternative Highs" was designed to showcase exciting activities and recreational diversions to drugs, alcohol and criminal activities that youngsters often find themselves drawn to in the area.

This was the chance to have a go at everything from bungee running to circus skills!

Sumo wrestling, the rodeo bull and laser quest clay shooting were some of the more unusual offers never before seen in Grimsby.

Dj session

Â鶹ԼÅÄ Blast provided the rhythmic beats throughout the day running music and DJing sessions, which were extremely popular with the crowd.

The music tent tempted young people to try their hand at mixing and scratching with DJ Al.

The banging beats and DJ battles commenced late into the afternoon, with showcase performances adding to the fabulous festival atmosphere.

DJ Liam, 13, fresh off the decks said: “That was absolutely brilliant! Never tried anything like it before. Can I come back and have another go?â€

Meanwhile, the local Creative Connexions team had guitars, amps and a drum kit for budding rock stars to thrash out tunes in an open-air jamming session.

New talent got tips and tuition from experienced musicians and played shoulder to shoulder in the casual atmosphere of the music marquee.

After confidently drumming through her performance, Claire, aged 15 from Grimsby, said: “I can’t believe it! I never thought I’d play a gig. That was my first gig wasn't it?â€

Outside the tuneful tent, dodgems clattered and sparked into action, teenagers tackled the imposing climbing wall and inflatable assault course and the surf machine proved a huge hit with beach wannabes.

As the sun went down on a glorious summers day, the main music stage opened with performances from ‘Dazed Dakotas’ and Green Day look-a-likes ‘Basket Case’.Ìý

The audience was kept entertained into the early evening and everyone left with a feeling they'd been involved in a quite extraordinary day.

Robyn Laurie, the community programmes director for Grimsby YMCA said "The whole atmosphere has been fantastic.

"We've had lots of really positive comments from everyone involved and we definitely need to consider running a similar event next year."
