After the success of The Tempest with Richard Briars last year, this new production of one of Shakespeare's best-loved comedies, stars Ross Kemp and Nichola McAuliffe as Shakespeare's most explosive couples.

Petruchio,
the flamboyant, brash adventurer in search of a wife and her dowry and Katharina, 'the shrew', wilful, funny and viciously bad-tempered.

The Taming of the Shrew is the second of three collaborations between Theatre Royal Plymouth and Malvern Theatres.

This is probably the most famous play ever written about the battle of the sexes and has been the basis for many musicals and films including Kiss Me Kate and The Boys from Syracuse.

Shakespeare sorted

Ross Kemp is probably best known for his local hard-man character, Grant Mitchell in Eastenders and more recently for ITV's Ultimate Force.

This is his first major Shakespearean role and he was "honoured" to be asked to play this lead role, remarking, "it is a great challenge and one not to shy away from, it is a great play and I am loving every minute of it".

Nichola McAuliffe arrives from the stage of the London Palladium where she recently starred in the spectacular musical, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Her television credits include Surgical Spirit and Pig in the Middle.

The rocky road to Petruchio's and Katharina's eventual union is littered with some of Shakespeare's funniest characters and most barbed wit.

Full of action and intrigue, the play's joyful conclusion has been the subject of much heated debate since it was first written and over 400 years later, is still guaranteed to spark lively debates.
