The Worcester based theatre company C&T has to announce plans for a major new drama project for young people.

The livingnewspaper.com will be launched at a major international conference in Telford on the 25th June.

The company claims that livingnewspaper.com is the largest online drama projects ever attempted, linking schools, colleges and universities across the globe.

Through a central website young people will be able to explore breaking news stories through drama and share their creative work online to a potential audience of millions around the globe.

Back to the 30's

Paul Sutton, C&T’s Artistic Director explained how the project came about: "Living Newspapers were a style of theatre first developed back in the 1930s.

"They took topical news stories of the day and turned them into epic plays. They were a fantastic way of explaining the news in the days before television.

"They were also famous for using cutting edge technology of their day, like projection and PAs. We thought this was an exciting way of making drama, so we have recreated the form for the Internet age.”

Website at the heart

Key to the project will be a specially created website.

Users will be able to download and upload video, sound and images as well as discussing news stories they feel passionate about.

Paul Sutton feels the project’s potential is enormous:

"The sky’s the limit. Everyone we have discussed the project with thinks it could really embrace so many different educational needs.

"For example, the new Citizenship curriculum in the National Curriculum would be a perfect place to use this project.

"We already have a list of national and regional agencies who are keen to become partners on this initiative. These are very exciting times.”

The Worcester Premiere

However, before its launch in schools in September, C&T plans a one-week Living Newspaper project exclusively for young people in Worcester.

C&T are inviting up to thirty young people in and around the city to join them at their base at University College Worcester to create the world’s first Living Newspaper play online.

Young people taking part will get to create a play about an important issue of the day, use the website, digital cameras, video, projectors computers and much more.

The week long premiere will take place from 28th July - 1st August.
