The National Theatre are coming to Malvern bringing an outstanding cast and a classic play.

Janet McTeer - star of TV's the Governor - and Lorcan Cranitch - from Ballykissangel - head a big cast.

The Duchess of Malfi was written nearly four hundred years ago and charts the calamitous consequences of a young widow's refusal to obey the command of her brothers.

They forbid her to remarry but she secretly enters into a passionate new bond.

Then, when the spy Bosola is planted in her household, a trap is set which leads to exile, torture, madness and death.

The Duchess is one of the most celebrated and demanding female roles of Jacobean theatre and is played by Janet McTeer.

Winner of both the Olivier and Tony Awards for Nora in Ibsen's A Dolls House (West End and Broadway) and has played numerous other theatrical roles.

She is more widely known for her role in the popular ITV series The Governor and was Oscar-nominated for her first major film Tumbleweeds.

Traditionally interpreted, the play has been given a modern staging with a twentieth century Italian flavour under the direction of Phyllida Lloyd.

Her many successful productions for the National Theatre include The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and The Way of the World and she is renowned for her direction of the West End hit Mamma Mia!

Janet McTeer is joined by no less than 23 actors and musicians including Lorcan Cranitch who plays the spy, Bosola.

He is fondly remembered for his television role along side Patsy Palmer in Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ 1's McCready and Daughter and as Sean Dillon in Ballykissangel.
