More and more young people are taking the opportunity to take a year out before going to uni, whether to work, study, travel, or take re-sits. These are usually called 'Gap Years.' .

What is a year out or 'gap year' all about?
It's a chance for you to see the world, visit other countries, learn new skills or do voluntary work. You can take a year out in many different countries, as well as the UK. Most people take a gap year before starting university, but you can take one whenever you want.

What can I do during a gap year?
There are lots of options open to you:

  • Volunteering in the UK or abroad.
  • Living abroad as part of a cultural exchange.
  • Becoming a member of an expedition to some far off country.
  • Joining a work experience programme.
  • Applying for paid work all over the world.
  • Learning a new skill on a training course.
