Rachel Willis from Â鶹ԼÅÄ Hereford and Worcester asks Jan Farnes more about her work.

How did you become an artist?
"I have drawn and painted for as long as I can remember. ÌýAs a primary school pupil, I recall being called out of class for drawing horses, (the love of my life), instead of listening to the lesson. ÌýAt the end of the day, I was complimented on my drawings as well Ìýas punished - encouragement indeed! I specialised in art at Maria Grey Froebel College, (teacher training), and taught art in primary schools in London, Germany Ìýand Hereford, (Margaret Allen Prep School -Redcap), as well as general subjects.

Have you worked on anything in the local area?
"I was one of the founder members of the Marches Artists, a self promoting group of high standard artists from Herefordshire and Shropshire, and exhibited with them for six years. For several years I produced Christmas cards for the Riding for the Disabled, (Leominster group), as well as a poster for national use. I have also undertaken many local commissions for animal portraits.

What is your most successful piece of work?
"I am not sure how you class success! ÌýIn 1994 I was a successful entrant in the Art and the Racecourse exhibition, in aid of the Spinal Injuries Association. And my painting was sold during the showings at Newmarket and Cork Street, London. I painted a life sized cow, (Country Cousin), for last year's Cow Parade in London and it was one of "the 60 most spectacular cows" selected for auction at Sothebys. ÌýUnfortunately it was stolen before the auction - fate unknown!!
I have had my cartoons published in Sally Tottle's book Body Sense and used as cards and magazine illustrations by Equine Marketing. ÌýI have also won prizes in this sphere - £100 of riding lessons and £50 fresh fish!! In terms of personal success, I am proud of the murals I have done for my grandchildren and the ones commissioned by a local prominent couple for their beautiful homes.

What plans have you got for the future?"As for the future, I hope to find time to complete more animal portraits and to continue to be given the opportunity to exhibit my work through the Rhea Gallery in Leominster -grandchildren permitting!

Have you got any tips for local artists?
"I wouldn't dare offer any tips to other artists other than - 'if you enjoy it do it but don't expect to be rich'!
