Climbers do exactly that. In nature, it's a means of getting to the light, using something else as a support. In the garden, climbers are great because they introduce another vertical element to the overall look.

 Description:
There are as many climbing roses as there are shrubby roses, but this is one of the best. It is an upright climber, and can be pruned to be a shrub. It produces a profusion of double flowers that are a full 10cm (4in) across.

 Description:
A semi-evergreen, woody stemmed climber grown for clusters of small, star-shaped flowers that smell just divine. Worth keeping in check as it can get rampant. 'Aureum' has bright green leaves irregularly splashed with yellow.

 Description:
A deciduous, woody stemmed climber with oval leaves. The flowers are tubular and flushed with pink and red. 'Graham Thomas' has flowers that are white when in bud, then open to reveal yellow. Keep in check otherwise it can become rampant. Keep well watered to avoid mildew.

 Description:
A very vigorous, deciduous, woody stemmed climber. The leaves, up to 20cm (8in) across, turn a rich crimson to bright scarlet in autumn. On a large scale, such as against a wall, this is a stunning sight.

 Description:
Throughout April it is hung with nodding, violet-blue flowers. These are followed later in the year by attractive whiskery seed-heads. Like all early-flowering clematis, it needs little pruning other than the removal of any dead or damaged growth after flowering.
