Preventing problems
Prevention is better than cure. The first line of defence against pests and diseases is a healthy plant, which has been well-fed and watered, as this is better equipped to fight off any attack. Check plants regularly to catch pests and diseases before they do much damage.
Safety with chemicals

Chemicals or organic?
Until recently, the magic wand for many gardeners was a bottle of chemicals. There are many other ways to deal with plant problems which are as effective as chemicals, but are environmentally friendly.
There are many different ways to protect your plants organically, such as picking pests off by hand or using biological control - using one animal predator to eradicate another. Organic pesticides are also available, but not all organic gardeners like to use these.
If you use chemicals, treat only the affected plant, ensure that the chemical is designed to deal with the pest or disease in question and the type of plant that is affected.
