Why do I have to do an ETW/Right to Work check?

Eligibility to Work checks, why they are important and what to expect

Updated: 3 November 2023

What is an ETW Check?

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ has a legal obligation to check certain documents to establish, as far as possible, that an individual that they are engaging is and/or continues to be eligible to work in the UK.

An eligibility to work check is required for:

  • All Freelancers (PAYE, Modus Gross, Service Company, Self Employed) upon starting work at the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ
  • Individuals with limited leave to remain (work permits/visas) – if their leave to remain is due to expire

Your ETW check should be completed on your first day, by a Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Staff member, who will then send the relevant documents to HR for processing. You are not permitted to send your own ETW in to HR as we must verify that an in person check of the documents has been completed by an individual other than yourself.

Please note that you will not be able to claim payment / your payment will not be automatically claimed in the Freelance Payment Portal if you do not have an ETW check on file. Not completing an ETW check at your nearest convenience may result in delays being paid.
