IN A NUTSHELL...

The Story: Mike Leigh's tenth movie has been feted across the world, winning awards at Venice and the British Independent Film Awards. Leigh has also received an Oscar nomination, along with the film's star, Imelda Staunton. The actress has practically been canonised for her turn as a salt-of-the-earth mum who "helps young girls" by performing illegal abortions in 50s London.
UK Box Office: Β£2.181 million (as at 5th July 2005)
Useless Fact: Leigh asked his cast to hum tunes from the 40s, but with one proviso: they couldn't be recognisable as the production couldn't afford to pay any royalties.
