Oliver Twist
Oliver Twist

IN A NUTSHELL...

The Story: Charles Dickens' 1830s-penned serialisation has been filmed numerous times, most notably by David Lean in 1948. This high-profile adaptation - a UK/Czech Republic/French/Italian co-production - is directed by Roman Polanski from a script by Ronald Harwood (The Pianist). The cast includes Ben Kingsley as Fagin, Jamie Foreman as Bill Sykes and Barney Clark as the titular hero. Clark himself hails from Islington, a stone's throw and a world away from London's East End.
Useless Fact: Dickensian London was recreated in Prague's Barrandov Studios. Of course, even if Roman Polanski had wished to film here, fears of extradition to the United States would have prevented it.
