Anyone who's seen U2 live will know the Irish rockers like to pull out all the stops – and concert film U2 3D is a suitably showy experience. Mixing snazzy 3D visuals with footage of the South American leg of their Vertigo tour, it's the first live-action film shot, produced and screened totally in 3D. The playlist alone with thrill fans, but while spectacular, the 3D element still can't replicate the feeling of a live gig.

There's something a little odd about watching a concert in a cinema. Do you stand up and dance, tap your feet, sing along, or even jump excitedly into the aisles – all knowing that you're not actually there? Arguably, much of the excitement of a live gig involves the proximity to your idols, and the sense that anything could happen. U2 3D inevitably does away with all this, but it does have something Rattle And Hum didn't have: 3D.

Once you've popped your 3D glasses on, you're treated to a stage-side view of Bono leaping around, sometimes lurching into the camera as if he's inches away from your face. And when the camera's placed among the audience, there's a more natural feeling of inclusion in an atmospheric gig. The crowd sing along passionately to tracks like New Year's Day, Bullet The Blue Sky and Sunday Bloody Sunday. With its 11-strong playlist and two encores, U2 3D is a great experience for fans who want to get up close and personal with their idols – even if it's not better than the real thing.
