Terkel In Trouble (2006)
15Contains strong violence, language and solvent abuse

Foul-mouthed, raucous, and laugh-out-loud funny, Terkel In Trouble is a snappy and anarchic animation from Denmark, beautifully voiced over into Britain's mainstream by some of our best comedy talent. Nerdish schoolboy Terkel (Adrian Edmondson) is sick of being bullied. As the threats turn ever more outlandishly serious, Terkel treads deeper into peril and paranoia - and the tension builds brilliantly - yet the laughs, the filth and the bodily fluids just keep on flowing.

His parents are too busy with newspapers, smoking and eye-wateringly kinky sex to pay him any attention, his 'street' best mate (Ben Bishop) is acting strangely, and the new supply teacher's advice to stand up to the bullies has backfired horribly. When Terkel tries to appease his demented tormentors by joining in, he makes things even worse. And then, ahead of a school camping trip, he starts receiving death threats...

It sounds heavy, but it's a breeze and a joy. Like South Park, Terkel In Trouble excels at finding the humour in unfunny subjects - in this case, bullying, child prostitution and suicide. But here humanity, insight and honesty trump the shock tactics. Its gleeful and provocative political incorrectness work because Terkel's fears and isolation, amidst all the crackpot fantasy, ring so heart-wrenchingly true.

"WHIP-SMART ANIMATION"

Energetic vocal turns from the likes of Bill Bailey, Johnny Vegas and Toby Stephens make the most of an excellent translation, and the whip-smart animation, particularly in the, shall we say, sicker sections, engages throughout. Terkel In Trouble is spirited, twisted and flat-out fun from start to finish.
