There's a scattering of funny moments in Confetti, but they're dispersed over a wide area where not much really happens. Sitcom stalwarts Martin Freeman and Jessica Stevenson make the most credible, and definitely the sanest couple out of three who compete to stage The Most Original Wedding. Improvisation is the key to keeping things real for mockumentary filmmaker Debbie Isitt, but it's all undone by a self-conscious wacky streak that kicks in as the party threatens to wind down early.

Matt and Samantha (Freeman and Stevenson) plan an MGM-style musical number to mark their special day despite a lack of singing and/or dancing talent. Meanwhile tennis partners Josef and Isabelle (Stephen Mangan and Meredith MacNeill) have plumped for a Wimbledon theme and Michael and Joanna (Robert Webb and Olivia Colman) are committed to expressing themselves fully - as naturists.

"MISTAKES WEIRD FOR FUNNY"

The latter couple are lumbered with the weakest storyline, which relies on Webb dropping his trousers for big laughs. It's one joke that Isitt attempts to drag out over two hours, but sadly it doesn't stretch that far... Freeman and Stevenson provide the heart, but they're never faced with a big enough crisis to make us truly care. It's Mangan who finds the best angle as the tennis has-been-but-never-was whose desperation would make even Tim Henman wince with embarrassment. Still, it all falls apart on the day of the judging when Isitt mistakes weird for funny. By this point the characters appear so far removed from reality, they may as well have the honeymoon on Mars.
