John Turturro

Romance & Cigarettes

Interviewed by Rachel Simpson

“There's a lot of me in this movie â€

Right from his fierce - and controversial - performance as Pino in Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing in 1989, John Turturro's proved he's rather more than just a supporting actor. A Queens boy born and bred, the New Yorker has since starred in seven more Spike Lee "joints" and become a firm favourite of the Coen Brothers who gave him his first major leading role in Barton Fink (1991) as well as memorable parts in The Big Lebowski (1998) and O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000). In 1992 he stepped behind the camera with the well-received autobiographical drama Mac, followed by theatrical tale Illuminata in 1998. His latest directorial effort Romance & Cigarettes is characteristically anything but ordinary: a working class, dirty-mouthed musical about love starring James Gandolfini, Kate Winslet and Christopher Walken.
