William Shatner hoped with this special edition DVD that he would get to redo the effects and insert footage originally removed. Paramount had other ideas but this release is far better than the old DVD.
Clear For Viewing
While the non-anamorphic, soft picture of the original DVD release was a disappointment, the new transfer is clear and rich in detail. The 5.1 sound mix seems to be the same as before.
Keeping It In The Family
William Shatner ropes in daughter Liz for the audio commentary as she was involved in the film's production. He is as pompous as ever, but funny with it, and sprinkles dry comments throughout the track about the disappointing production.
"Not Enough Discernment"
Executive producer Ralph Winter doesn’t hold back when he describes the making of the movie as "too much exuberance, not enough discernment". Such talk is refreshing when many extra features ignore the shortcomings of the film they cover. Shatner is less apologetic in The Journey documentary, but you have to admire someone who can talk about it all with as much humour as he does. Add in Leonard Nimoy talking about how he tried to help Bill with the politics of making a movie and you’ve got worthwhile viewing.
Rocks In Their Heads
Most amusing are the tales of how Shatner wanted to create rock men that would come out of rock walls. He asked for ten, Paramount gave him one, and even Shatner has to admit it looked terrible. Better still, you can see the laughable footage of this guy staggering about in a foam rock suit.
