Olivier Martinez

S.W.A.T.

Interviewed by Alana Lee

β€œIf you put me, Michelle Rodriguez, Colin Farrell, and LL Cool J together in a car for two hours, you'd have some pretty good jokes ”

Despite being a latecomer to acting Olivier Martinez quickly became a French superstar, but decided to escape "arty" European movies in favour of Hollywood. He came to international attention in Unfaithful and now plays the the baddie in S.W.A.T., with Colin Farrell and Samuel L Jackson.

It's an action-packed movie but you don't get to do very much, do you?!

I was the only one who wasn't asked to do anything physically demanding in this movie! I basically don't move in this movie! I was cuffed and wore an orange suit. But that was the challenge... how to be immobile and find a good chair!

How was it working with this cast of actors?

It was a great team of actors. I really had a good time working with them. They're great people and great actors so it was very easy for me. I was very lucky because we're all actors with big personalities so we didn't know how it would be, but it turned out very nice. Everybody was very sweet and respectful and I have great memories.

It's quite an international cast too...

Yes, it was interesting because we came from different places and cultures. But you know, if you put me, Michelle Rodriguez, Colin Farrell, and LL Cool J together in a car for two hours, you can have some pretty good jokes!

Why did you think this film and this character would be a good follow-up to Unfaithful?

I like to switch characters. I like to play different characters. Part of the charm of the job is to be different all the time. And I love to play bad guys!

How do you feel about the way your career is going now, working in the Hollywood industry rather than in France?

So far Hollywood likes me! I like to work in America. In France, they're hung up on "arty" movies which usually means it's a boring film that no one goes to see. But I think many commercial movies can be "arty" too.
