Swept Away DVD (2003)

There's been a morbid fascination with Guy Ritchie and Madonna's romantic comedy since the announcement that it was going straight to DVD in the UK. If you're brave enough to sneak a peek at a washout of a movie, you'll find much strangeness on this disc.

TECHNICAL FEATURES

Picture Whatever the critics say about the film, there's no disputing that this is a quality transfer to disc for a sun-kissed, luxuriously shot movie that sparkles on screen.

Sound The 5.1 sound mix does a great job of conveying the vast open seascape that Madonna finds herself stuck in.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Audio Commentary You can't help but feel that director Guy Ritchie sounds somewhat reluctant to be doing this commentary. Still, compared to his near silent and grumpy producer Matthew Vaughn, Guy does at least manage to choke out the odd fact about the making of the film.

Both fall into the commentary trap of turning up for a chat and hoping that'll do. And unfortunately, it makes for an uncomfortable audio experience. Guy should have quit when he came up with the fact that the water is blue for the scenes at sea.

Making of What is commendable about this 20-minute featurette is that at least Madonna and Guy Ritchie don't take themselves seriously and gush about the movie they're making.

Although unlikely to endear you any more to the movie, there is at least one funny moment. Spotting Guy's concerned face as Adriano Giannini straddles and writhes on top of her, Madonna points out: "Well Guy, you wrote it!"

Deleted Scenes There are 16 deleted scenes, all with optional commentary. It's easy to see why the material was cut. Some scenes really should remain deleted.

Additional Extra Features Also on the disc is a trailer gallery and cast and crew filmographies.
