Resident Evil DVD (2002)

There are some strange special features on the "Resident Evil" DVD, but then what do you expect when it's all about zombies?

TECHNICAL FEATURES

Picture The film looks sensational thanks to a disc transfer that's sharp and detailed, even during those dark zombie-strewn moments.

Sound The 5.1 sound mix is a guttural beast, littered with deep sub woofer beats and shredded with effects that tear around the speakers.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Audio Commentary Paul Anderson may have wanted to give you a precise guide to how he made the film, but he's got no chance in an audio commentary that's dominated by the strange chatter between Milla "why can't people say my name properly?" Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez.

Paul says he loves the opening of the movie, Milla says it's crap - and that sums up the tone of this bizarre experience.

Making Of The interviews in this 27-minute look at the making of "Resident Evil" cover the usual areas of plot and character. There is some good behind-the-scenes footage of some of the fight scenes.

Scoring "Resident Evil" Paul Anderson opens this featurette by talking a little about the early films of John Carpenter and his love of the electro-bass scores that defined them from other movies. For "Resident Evil", Paul wanted to update that style of music, so united Marco Beltrami and Marilyn Manson (who clearly doesn't get any more sun than the average DVD reviewer) to produce the score.

Costumes Apart from learning that the cuts and bruises on Milla are for real, there's not much else to this quick look at the costumes of the films.

Set Design Rather than try to simply emulate the look of the game, art director Richard Bridgland wanted to create a whole new look for the genre, as you'll see in this featurette.

Zombie Camera Tests It's only a minute long, but then how much footage do you want of zombies yawning into the camera?
