Sleeping Beauty (Deluxe Edition) DVD (1959)

Disney do bandy about the word classic too much when marketing their films, but "Sleeping Beauty" is truly a benchmark of animated art and entertainment which looks stunning on DVD.

TECHNICAL FEATURES

Picture The beautiful animation has been transferred to DVD with real care, preserving the intricate detail, and presenting colours as bright as when originally crafted.

Sound A choice of Dolby and DTS 5.1 mixes are on offer, and both are excellent. The mixing of the original stereo track has been sensitively handled, with good separation between the front speakers. Scary moments in the movie gain new authority with selective subwoofer enhancements.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Once Upon a Dream This 16-minute look at the making of a true Disney classic amazingly includes contributions from the animation director, colour stylist, and production designer of the movie.

Eyvind Earle was responsible for the unique graphic look of the film. His brief from Disney was to create a new style for the studio. As film critic Leonard Maltin points out, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" had become "the comparison point for everything that followed", and Disney wanted to push the boundaries of what was possible with "Sleeping Beauty". To that end, it was the first animated movie to be created in 70mm, which required not only larger drawings, but more detail too.

Ink and Print Studio For this interactive game, you can choose from a wide selection of the movie's characters and colour them in using the palette provided. Merryweather is on hand to help but quickly becomes exasperated if you choose the wrong colour. The limiting thing about this game is that you have to pick the right colour, so there's no chance to do anything silly, and young kids may find that a bit boring.

Rescue Aurora Adventure Game You can be Prince Phillip in this game (no, not the gaffe-prone one), and save Sleeping Beauty from her eternal slumber. Solve puzzles along the way, slay Maleficent, and you get to smooch Aurora.

Art Attack With this five-minute guide you can build your very own castle using three loo rolls, a polystyrene cup, and a kitchen roll.

WHAT'S MISSING?

This is a good disc, but a little more on the production of the film would have been good. For an example, see the "Beauty and the Beast" SE DVD.
