My Lucky Stars Collector's Edition DVD (1985)

The lethally enjoyable combination of Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, and Yuen Biao star in the fantastically silly action frenzy that is "My Lucky Stars". Previously released years ago on video by Imperial Entertainment, the film now comes uncut to DVD with a 15 rating, with the benefit of the restoration treatment.

TECHNICAL FEATURES

Picture Years have been shaved off the appearance of the film with a quality restoration that retains the pale colours of the movie, but ditches the excess grain that could be found on old video releases.

Sound The sound is an impressive mono to 5.1 upgrade. Occasionally it sounds a little unnatural, but the music score has been mixed well between the front speakers, and there are some occasional directional effects to be enjoyed as well. The Cantonese version carries a little more bass to it than the English dub, which you're now going to promise not to use aren't you? The film is good silly fun, but it doesn't improve with silly English voices.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Audio Commentary Bey Logan is once again our guide for another audio commentary that will leave you an expert on the film should you listen to it all, which is a very easy thing to do. One of the most interesting facts he reveals is that Sammo was not able to get permission to shoot the opening scenes on the Tokyo subway. But he just shot it anyway, which explains the truly bemused looks on the faces of the Japanese commuters as Jackie Chan chases two hoodlums at full pelt through the station.

Sammo Hung Interview Charismatic as ever, Sammo reveals that the inspiration for it came from a Japanese TV series, and he talks us through a particularly scary stunt, where everyone knew the stuntman would get hurt. On cue he did, went off to hospital to get stitches, only to come back for more! Michiko Nishikawa Interview Nishikawa is the impressively toned female lead for the film, and a fascinating subject for interview. Her tomboy games when she was young lead to an interest in karate and weightlifting that saw her win the power-lifting championships three years in a row. Her physique and fitness won her a role in "My Lucky Stars", which she describes as being great fun to shoot, and she has some good anecdotes about the rapport between the male leads. Additional Extra Features Also on the DVD are trailer and TV spot galleries.
