Austin Powers in Goldmember

Interviewed by James Mottram

How did you feel when you started on set?

I was very nervous, I didn't really know what I was doing. I was just grateful to get the opportunity. I didn't really think what would happen if it did go bad - I just did it and tried to do the best I could. I tried to learn - I felt like it was a new chapter of my life. A new way to grow as an artist.

Could you be attracted to someone like Austin?

You know what, I'm very attracted to someone who makes me laugh and is that charming. Really, I could be charmed by anyone. I'm just a sucker for somebody that is charming.

What was the best thing about making the film?

When I watched the second "Austin Powers" movie ["The Spy Who Shagged Me"] in the cinema, I thought it was very funny that his teeth would look like that, but that so many women would find him irresistible. Those teeth were crazy to me! Mike didn't have them in on set, until one day he was sitting close to me and we were doing the scene. He said, "Foxxy!", and all I saw were those teeth and that face - I had a flashback and burst out laughing for ten minutes. I wanted some of those teeth! Michael Caine got 'em!

Did the work of Pam Grier influence you at all?

My mom loved Pam Grier. She loved Foxy Brown. I got a chance to meet her when I was 15, at the Source awards. Before the movie, I watched every one of her films I could find. At the reading with Mike, I wouldn't talk unless I was talking like her. She helped me tremendously. She's who I based everything on. She was my inspiration.

How did you feel when you put the costume on?

I felt gangsta! Especially when they gave me my gun!
