Not Another Teen Movie (2002)
15

You’ve really got to hand it to Hollywood. Just when you think films have got as bad as they're ever going to be, along comes a picture that takes cinema to a whole new level of shoddiness.

Indeed, the only way Joel Gallen's film could be any worse would be if it had been released under its original title: "Ten Things I Hate About Clueless Road Trips When I Can't Hardly Wait to Be Kissed". As it is, this is an incredibly tired spoof of rites du passage cinema.

Set at John Hughes High School (geddit?), it throws together all the genre's stereotypes (the popular jock, the cocky blond guy, the token black guy) and then uses a thin plot about turning a plain girl into a prom queen as an excuse for gags that are as gross as they are unamusing.

"Not Another Teen Movie" massively underachieves. Perhaps it might have been more interesting had the film tackled the single most misleading thing about teen cinema - namely that Hollywood tries to convince us that teens are confident and carefree when we all know that they are riddled with angst and acne. But instead of getting to the rotten heart of the genre, it prefers to peddle gags about snogging pensioners.

As such, it is a film that should be avoided at all costs - unless, that is, you'd like to see a movie that makes "American Pie 2" look like "Citizen Kane".
