Help! I'm a Fish DVD (2001)

The European collaborative effort behind "Help! I'm a Fish" turn out a cheery animated film that's now out on a good, if slightly serious, DVD.

Over 50% of the movie is digitally enhanced, and as a whole it transfers well to DVD, with clear bright colours and sharp definition throughout.

There's a choice between a 5.1 or 2.0 sound mix. Both are good, but if you can make use of the 5.1 then do choose it, as there are plenty of zippy directional speaker effects to enhance the pace of the film. Just watch out that the subwoofer rumbles that accompany the ever-so-nasty sharks don't freak out the youngest viewers.

There's a good selection of extra features, and Metrodome has created some lovely animated menus to showcase them in, but the overall tone is a bit serious for children. All should enjoy the multi-angle scenes that deconstruct the animation process from sketch through to animatics, to finished animation. Whether the rather earnest interviews with the cast and crew will prove quite so fun is another matter, but anyone interested in animation will find it mildly interesting.

The production notes seem to be written for the younger reader in mind, and deconstruct the animation process in simple terms. It's more likely, though, that most kids - and Europop-loving adults - will be playing the catchy "Little Trees" music video on a loop rather than reading text notes.
