Nurse Betty DVD (2000)

The huge success of "Bridget Jones Diary", will no doubt have earned Renée Zellweger a host of new fans who should certainly all check out the DVD release of "Nurse Betty". Plenty of extra features (that are actually fun to sit through!) and immaculate presentation of the film, distinguish this superior DVD.

Set in sunny LA, the picture transfers to disc with all the brightness and clarity you could wish for. It's hard to find fault with image quality this good and it just makes you wonder how you put up with VHS for so long.

The 5.1 sound mix doesn't have a lot of major effects to deal with, rather it's busy with subtle atmospherics that wrap you into the delirious world of make believe that Zellweger is trapped in. That said, moments of drama, like the guy hit by a car, gets a sharp bass response from the subwoofer.

There's not just one but two audio commentaries on this DVD. Director Neil LaBute features on both, with the first recorded with cast members, and the second with crew. The cast commentary includes Morgan Freeman, Chris Rock and Renée Zellweger. It's perhaps the more fun of the two, with Freeman and Rock quite witty with their banter.

If you're familiar with the film, you'll know that Zellweger's world revolves around a character in a soap opera, "A Reason to Live". Joy of joys, nine episodes of all the footage shot for this fake drama are included on the DVD, and good fun they are too (and handy if you can't get Channel 5).
